# The five faults that fail most practical tests

Most failures are not dramatic. They are the same five ordinary faults, repeated until one of them becomes serious.

## Junctions and observation

Pulling out at a junction without effective observation is the most common reason candidates fail. It is rarely a failure to look — it is looking too early, then committing to the gap you saw five seconds ago rather than the road in front of you now.

Fix it by making the last look the deciding one. If the last check does not confirm the gap, wait.

## Mirrors and signals

Examiners are watching for mirrors before every change of speed or direction, not mirrors in general. Checking constantly but not at the moment it matters still records as a fault.

Responding late to traffic lights and road markings follows the same pattern: the information was available, it just was not acted on early enough.

## Control and moving off

Steering control and moving off safely account for a large slice of remaining failures, and both improve quickly with practice in quiet areas rather than more test-route rehearsal.

If you are collecting the same driver fault three times in a lesson, that is the thing to train next — not the manoeuvre you already do well.
